Visit to Baltimore & Washington, DC with Mimi and Papa
We drove down to Baltimore to meet up with my mom and Sherwin a few weeks ago. They were in our neck of the woods and had a great time catching up.
We had a great time visiting and they got to hang out with a much more active Riley. I’m starting to understand the proverbial “you’ve grown so much since I saw you last” aunt/grandma comments. It makes a lot more sense to me now!

Riley Maverick Hair’s first birthday party
Riley celebrated his first birthday in grand style. He was visited by twenty families including his grandparents on both sides and his aunt Leslie from the Dallas, TX area. We catered the event through Ferraro’s, a local Italian restaurant in Westfield, NJ. The food was a big hit. The cake was baked by a local bakery in town called Bovella’s and was also a huge hit. Riley absolutely loved the cake and required a bath immediately following his gluttonous eating spree.

Riley (AKA Giggle Monster) having fun with his new slide/play area
Riley received an early birthday gift from his grandmother (Mimi) and aunt (Leslie). After checking with Mimi, the instructions were given to open the play area and put it together so he could start enjoying his present as early as possible. I took photos of him checking out the gift. You can find these here:

Replaced Kitchen Faucet
Much to Danielle’s delight, the kitchen faucet broke a couple of days ago. She wished this would happen for awhile and I’m working to reign in her thoughts on what should break next. When something breaks, it means either I’m going to get to replace it or a handyman/plumber/electrician/name the tradesman here will come out and charge us for replacement.
Yesterday, we went to Home Depot to do some shopping. We looked at the selection of faucets and decided on a Kohler Forte. While at the Home Depot I inquired about how to get the little nut off since there was little room to loosen it. The guys there suggested I pick up a basin wrench. So.. we bought a wrench from Ridgid that did the job.
After 10 minutes of cursing under my breath, the nut came off. Well, I tried to not mouth off like a sailor but I slipped when I cut the top of my thumb!
We are very happy with the new faucet. It is definitely an upgrade!
I have included some photos. What’s a story without photos? Oh.. and by the way, the before shot was after I started to dismantle the old faucet so it’s not overly fair…

The old faucet definitely had a long life. The rusted post/bolt and nut will require some WD-40 for loosening and LOTS of patience…

After finally getting the nut off, I had some fun cutting through the old copper feeders:
The new faucet is set into place with screws and connected to the water lines. As you may note, the connections were a little pinched so I ended up buying a couple of 12″ extensions from Home Depot after these photos were taken. I thought this was wise since I’d rather not chance a water leak under the sink. That’s the last thing we would like to return to after a day out, or even worse, a trip out of town.
Finally, a shot after the installation. There are no leaks and the new faucet is a joy:
Riley: Beware! The Sock Monster Cometh….
I had the opportunity to take some shots of Riley and some of his play routine. He loves to pull himself up on ledges, gates or whatever else is strong enough to withstand him. He likes to chew on whatever he deems a toy. It reminds me a bit of my childhood and of a billy goat that was eating my belt.. Oh.. Never mind, I’ll come back on topic….

Pictures of Riley feeding himself
Riley is learning how to feed himself. He’s a bit messy but likes the level of independence.
On a related note, he’s becoming a bit more finicky now and knows how to keep food from going in his mouth. Suppose it’s time to teach him about choo choo trains or the the plane landing on the runway…
